Becoming A Catholic (RCIA)

Icon of ChristThis is the process through which interested adults are gradually introduced to the Catholic Faith and way of life. The entire process takes several months and follows a structured programme towards the final rite at the Easter Vigil when converts will become full members. However, each person's conversion journey is unique, and an individual will progress at their own pace guided by the Holy Spirit and by attending Mass and personal prayer.

At St Mary's the RCIA programme is run once a year beginning in September. This includes following a ten session Alpha Course, followed by the "Exploring the Catholic Church" series of eight sessions. Additionally the catechetical team is available for 1 -1 catechesis if this is desired by candidates at any stage.

All sessions take place on Saturday mornings (although this could change) and are sometimes followed by a simple lunch. Specific timings will be confirmed before the start of each course.

The Alpha Course

This is a video and discussion based course. Talks are given by Nicky Gumbel, the pioneer of the Alpha Course. Course book and manual available.

This is an ideal introduction to the core beliefs of Christianity and has a wide appeal reaching those who have some faith, or who have no faith at all. It is also ideal for believers who want to deepen their faith and grow their knowledge of Christianity. Key sessions include; "Who is Jesus?", "Why did Jesus Die?","How does God guide us?" and "How can I resist evil?"

Additionally there is a Retreat Day which includes sessions on "Who is the Holy Spirit?", "What does the Holy Spirit do?" and "How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?"

Exploring The Catholic Church

This is a video and discussion based course. Talks are given by Marcellino D'Ambrosio, professor of theology at the University of Dallas. Course book and manual are available.

This is the recommended next step after the Alpha Course and provides specific instruction in the Catholic Faith, including subjects like Baptism, Confirmation, Prayer and The Mass. It is also intended for Catholics who want to deepen their faith. It is part of the Catholic Faith Exploration series.
